So far our Kessler history begins with our Great Great Grandfather, Anthony Kessler. We still have much to learn about him and his wife Margaret who had settled in New York State by 1861 but we have recently made contact with some of our Kessler cousins! This latest update shows some of the new material. Special thanks to our "new" cousins Jeanne Van Epps and Paula Conge for their help. 1. Anthony Kessler (Kesler). Born on 27 Dec 1836 in Prussia (Germany) Bavaria. [1] Anthony died in Rochester NY, on 17 Sep 1917; he was 80. Buried in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Rochester NY. Occupation: Tailor. [2], [3]
Arrived in the United States on 21 April 1857 on the "Agnes", Captain Fried G. Schelling. The "Agnes" had left from Bremen - Antonis listed as a 22 year old Tailor from Bavaria with a final destination at Rochester. He traveled in steerage. [4]
Family Story - he was a stable boy who fell in love with German aristocracy - they ran to this country. He never allowed English to be spoken in the house. He had a picture of the Kaiser over his bed which he turned over during WWI. [5]
Died of Chronic Interstitial Nepritis, also had L. Hemiphlegia, died at 18 Priscilla Str, Rochester NY, parents listed as being born in Germany, name "cannot be learned" [2]
Lived with Daughter Lena and son in Law William F Schwartz on Vose Street in 1910 [6]
Obit - "Anthony Kessler died yesterday at the home of a daughter, Mrs. William Schwartz, 18 PriscillaStreet aged 89 years. He leaves seven daughters, Mrs. Richard Mink, Mrs. William Lawson, Mrs Abraham Blekkenk, Mrs Minnie Christiaans, Mrs Frank Hubbard, Mrs Bernard Ban Epps and Mrs William Schwartz, and three sons, Alexander, Anthony, and William Kessler; fifty four grandchildren and thirty-seven great-grandchildren, all of Rochester. The body is at the home of Mrs Blekkink, 443 Central Park." [7]
Anthony married Margaret (Margareth) Niner (Neidinger?), daughter of Nicholas Niner (Neidinger?) & C. Born on 27 Jun 1843 in Bavaria (Germany) Baden. [1] Margaret (Margareth) died on 20 Jul 1905; she was 62.
