Greenman Family Cemetery
Town of Yates
Orleans County NY

This small abandoned cemetery on the edge of a field is the resting place for several generations of our Greenman Family. In the spring 2003 Art Allen and his daughter Chris Wheat entered the cemetery - probably being the first members of our family to visit the graves in over a century!

The photographs below, taken by Chris Wheat document the significant graves found there. A complete listing of the gravestones can be found at by going to the Orleans County Roots Web Page

Our family owes a debt of gratitude to Historian Richard Nellis guiding the family to the cemetery and for helping our research in many ways!

We must begin the tour of the Greenman Cemetery at the grave of Chloe Greenman. Chloe was the daughter of Preserved Greenman and the wife of her first cousin, William G Greenman who is rests beside her. Their first daughter was Tryphosa Greenman Hunt (see her photograph)

As you can see, the stone has been badly damaged. The inscription is almost illegible, but luckily it was transcribed by members of the DAR in 1933. According to the transcript, the stone reads:

Cloah, wife of Wm G
d July 25, 1851 ae 52 yr 4 mo 11 da

Next to Cloah (Chloe) rests her husband, William G Greenman. He was the son of William B Greenman, who was the brother of Preserved Greenman. William G was the father of Tryphosa.
